Alita Battle Angel
In 2563, a catastrophic war known as the “Fall” had destroyed the Earth. When examining the wrecked city of the metropolis called Iron City, cyborg scientist Dr. Dyson Ido discovered a bodiless cyborg with a fully intact human brain. Ido rebuilt the cyborg, which has no memory of his past, and named it “Alita” after the name of his deceased daughter, even installing it in the body he had built for the “real” Alita before he was killed by a crazy cyborg.
Alita befriends a teenage boy named Hugo, who dreams of moving to the rich sky city, Zalem. Hugo introduces him to the competitive sport of Motorball, a royale fighting race where cyborgs fight to the death.
Alita discovered that Ido was a Hunter-Warrior when he followed him one night and they met three cyborg killers led by Grewishka. When Ido was injured, Alita instinctively attacked the cyborg, killing two of them while damaging Grewishka before he retreated underground. Although Alita rediscovered his expertise in the ancient “Panzer Kunst” martial arts, Ido prevented him from becoming a Hunter-Warrior. The next day, Alita found and brought home the Berserker body from the ARM ship that crashed outside the city. Ido refused to install it in the body, fearing the consequences of Alita’s full compatibility with the body; because the ship belonged to an opposing faction in the war that destroyed other sky cities, this shows that Alita was originally part of the enemy forces.
Fed up with Ido, Alita himself registered as a Hunter-Warrior. One night, he and Hugo entered the Kansas Bar to ask other Hunter-Warriors to help him defeat Grewishka, but they refused, because Grewishka was not on the wanted list. Suddenly, Grewishka with an upgraded body enters the bar and challenges Alita for a rematch, revealing she was sent by her boss, Nova, to destroy it. Despite possessing courage and martial arts skills, Alita’s body was sliced by Grewishka’s sharp fingers, making her only left upper, left arm and head, but she was able to damage Grewishka’s eyes with her remaining arm, allowing Iddo, Hugo, and Hunter Another warrior to force him to retreat. Ido implanted Alita in the body of the Berserker, which automatically interacts with the system.
With her new body, Alita entered her name in the Motorball trial contest, but Ido discovered that the other contestants were Hunter-Warriors and criminal cyborgs hired by Vector to kill him. During the race, Hugo, who made Alita fall in love, called Alita and asked him to meet her at the church that was left behind. After Alita got rid of the other Motorball contestants, he headed to the old church and was confronted by Zapan, a cyborg prize hunter who had captured Hugo. Alita learns that Hugo spends his nights attacking cyborgs and stealing their body parts for Vector, the creator of Motorball, with Zapan accusing him of being a murderer. Zapan then fatally injures Hugo, but Chiren, Ido’s ex-wife, manages to save his life by making him behead and use Alita’s heart to stabilize his brain. Zapan tries to stop him but Alita cuts a portion of his face with Zapan’s own sword.
Ido transplants Hugo’s head into a cyborg’s body before informing Alita that Hugo’s actions are based on the false belief that he will eventually be able to buy his way to Zalem. Ido claimed that this was just a lie made by Vector, and that the citizens of the City of Iron would never enter Zalem; only Motorball champions can hope to achieve such goals. Alita decides to confront Vector, which is one of a variety of ‘dolls’ that can be remotely controlled by Nova, a powerful Zalem scientist. Through Vector, Nova revealed to Alita that Chiren had been harvested for his organs and then ordered Grewishka to kill him. Alita fought Grewishka again and killed him before stabbing Vector, telling Nova that he made a mistake by belittling her.
Ido then tells Alita that Hugo has run away and is trying hard to climb the factory jar towards Zalem. Alita begged Hugo to return with him, but suddenly a large thorny ring triggered by Nova came sliding down the tube, tearing Hugo’s body and tossing it into the air. Jumping after him – having regained the memory of the same attack during the original Autumn War – Alita managed to grab her remaining arm and use her sword to secure herself to the tube. Hugo’s elbow joints couldn’t help and he fell to his death.
